Self-Care Idea: Nature Walks to Nurture Mental Health

Spending time outdoors can be one of the easiest and most accessible ways to support your mental health. Many studies have shown that being in nature can lower stress, reduce anxiety, and even boost creativity and focus. Beyond the health benefits, there is something grounding about nature that can offer a sense of calmness that isn’t always easy to find in daily life.

In my own experience of taking nature walks, I’ve noticed how much more self-reflective I am. These walks have been an anchor when life feels overwhelming and have offered a brief escape from reality. Nature invites us to engage all five senses, allowing us to simply observe and exist.

Here are some helpful tips to consider when connecting with nature any time of year:

Leave out noise and distractions:

  • To fully immerse yourself, try walking without your phone or silence your notifications. Think of this time as an opportunity to unplug from everything.

Walk slowly:

  • The slower you move throughout your walk, the more you’ll notice. Slowing down helps make this an intentional practice.

Engage the five senses:

  • Whether it’s feeling the breeze on your face or noticing the sounds beneath your feet, allow your environment to pull you into the present moment. Invite curiosity about what your senses are picking up.

End with gratitude:

  • Before you finish, take a breath and thank yourself for showing up, taking that time, listening to your body, and embracing self-compassion.
