Why Play Therapy

When children are struggling, they often struggle with pinpointing or finding the words to articulate what they may be feeling. As adults, we tend to process our emotional experiences by talking them through, but kids often communicate differently. They reveal what is happening internally through their play. This is where play therapy comes in.

What is Play Therapy?

Play therapy is a developmentally appropriate, evidence-based approach that allows children to explore and communicate their emotions in a way that can feel a bit more natural and safe to them. Play can help a child express and process their emotions, develop coping skills, and build healthy relationships. This therapeutic intervention is often used with children between the ages of 3-12. It can also be helpful for teens and even adults in some cases! The goal of a play therapist is to create a safe and nurturing environment where children can explore their inner world and work through struggles at their own pace. Play therapy is about more than just playing with toys; it is a structured and intentional therapeutic process led by a trained clinician who understands how to use play as a pathway toward healing.

There is more than meets the eye when it comes to play therapy. It is about more than just “playing.” By allowing children to explore and express themselves in a developmentally appropriate way, play therapy lays the groundwork for healing, growth, and resilience.
