Madison Casner

Graduate Level Intern

Madison believes growth starts with a single step—and sometimes a gentle nudge. Currently earning her Master’s in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Northwestern University with a focus on children and adolescents, she brings a “just do it” attitude to her work, encouraging clients to step beyond their comfort zones and into their potential.

She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Northeastern University, where she discovered her passion for helping young voices be heard—especially through her early training in selective mutism treatment at a Manhattan psychology practice. While there, she spent time co-facilitating social skills groups, working with Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) trained clinicians in the treatment of Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), and co-facilitating Parent Management Training (PMT) groups for Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and ODD. Now, she’s expanding her reach at the University of Mary Washington Counseling Center, working with college students navigating the challenges of emerging adulthood.

Drawing on CBT, ACT, and solution-focused approaches, Madison blends encouragement with challenge. She believes true change comes from getting to the roots of a problem—uncovering the deeper patterns, beliefs, and experiences that fuel it—and then exploring them together to create lasting, meaningful growth. Therapy with her is an active partnership: equal parts empathy, action, and a dash of humor when needed.

Outside the office, you’ll find her spending her time outdoors staying active through hiking, running, walking, and weightlifting, enjoying time with friends and family, or wrangling her two dogs and two cats. Whether in the gym or the therapy room, her philosophy is the same: build strength from the inside out and keep showing up– every rep matters.

Madison is a Graduate Level Intern and is working towards licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor in Virginia. She works under the supervision of Dr. Michael Deitz, LPC, and Director of Graduate Fieldwork. In the event that clients have any questions or concerns about Madison’s work, her supervisor can be contacted at drdeitz@healthyminds-therapy.com or by phone at (540) 845-6940.Â
