Supervisee in Clinical Social Work
Preston works with individuals and couples, specializing in LGBTQIA+ populations 18 years and older. As a gay man, he recognizes the need for an unconditionally affirming space to explore issues of sexuality, gender, self-esteem/self-hate, body image, relationship issues, open/poly relationships, anxiety, depression, etc. His counseling style focuses on developing a genuine connection with his clients based on mutual respect and trust in order to facilitate the client’s growth.
He primarily leans towards humanistic approaches such as existential and person-centered therapy, but believes in mixing behavior- and emotion- focused therapies based on the client’s needs. Self-worth and personal values are often central themes in his work with clients. Therapy can feel like serious work, but Preston recognizes the need for positivity, encouragement, and laughter throughout the process. His ultimate goal is for clients to maintain stability and maximize joy in their lives.
Preston holds in-person and telehealth sessions through the Alexandria office. He received his Bachelor’s in Anthropology from Washington University in St. Louis and his Master’s of Social Work from Columbia University. He has experience working with queer clients from positions he held at The Trevor Project and the Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy in New York City. He currently holds an LMSW and is pursuing LCSW licensure.
